 Baziaș monastery , with its Church having dedication day the Ascension was always considered  the most holy of Orthodox Serbs in the Danube Gorges.This is due to the tradition of these sites linking the name of the first Serb archbishopSt.Sava Nemanjic, which it is sayd  that woul have stopped here due to a storm unleashed by Cosava wind.Unable to go forward ,St,would be addressed with the words „Baș  ziaș” ,hence the name of the settlement and monastery remains, write priest vasa lupulovic and prof. Borislav D.Krstic in their book „Baziaș settlement history – history of Baziaș  monastery” appeared in 1998 published by the Union of Serbes in Romania.

 Mound located in the southwest of the island Ostrov- Moldova Veche  and herd  of wild horses living on the island led to the legend of Attila.The legend says that Attila was buried secretly and all the soldiers who buried him were killed so the place of tomb of Attila remain secret.

 Attila had a black stallion with star on his forehead that only he could ride, and after his death one his sons toke the stallion aut from the stables to tame him but he ran away.Angry son of Attila sent un his pursuit few soldiers riding on red mares , but at night when they were resting, mares fled with the stallion.He heard the call of his master finding the secret place of the tomb, where he remained to guard.It is said that at night the soul of Attila strddles handsome stallion galloping cross the endless plains of Europe.

 The biggest attracion would be  the grave of Attila but he was buried in theree casket: one gold one silver and one iron along with  its weapons and jewelry .Among the treasures  buried in the tomb it is the sword of Attila – knows as „ Sword of God”.


 Waterfalls of natural botanic area of Ggreat Valley are near the village at an altitudine of 500-700 meters.Waterfalls in the river Mudava are known as waterfall  from hut of Draghici and watewrfall Moll of Capet and have heights between 15and 20 meters.Acces to the waterfalls is possible on county road from Moldova Noua – Padina Matei.

Special bird protection area Ostrovul Moldova Veche 01Aria is placed in the European biogeographical region, according to European standards. Category and type of protected area: special bird protection area, Category IV IUCN.

Accessibility: Orşova- Moldova Noua-Pojejena-Baziaş - DN57 to Moldova Veche.

Types of habitats: wetland habitats Area: 1627.0 hectares.

Limits: area is located on the territory of the town Moldova Noua, Caras-Severin.

Peștera Gaura cu Muscă 01

The "Hole with Fly" cave is located 12 km downstream from Moldova Noua, Caras Severin county, at approx. 30 m above the level of the Danube. You can reach the place from the road that crosses the Danube Gorge, 12 km downstream from Moldova Noua, in the place where you find a source of drinking water.

It was inhabited during the Hallstatt period, being an ideal shelter for primitive men. Its position, with an entrance that dominates the Danube, was ideal for defense, so in medieval times it has been fortified and armed with guns and a small garrison of soldiers. Rezervaţia Naturală Valea Mare 01

The Reserve is placed in the European biogeographical region, according to European standards. Category and type of protected area: nature reserve, Category IV IUCN.

Accessibility: Orşova- Moldova Noua - DN57 up to Moldova Noua, then on the county road that connects Moldova Noua to Padina Matei. Immediately after exitin Moldova Noua, on the right side of the road to Padina Matei, there is the reserve.

Types of habitats: forest habitats and rocky teritories. Reserve area: 1179.00 hectares.

Stânca Babacaia 01

The Babacaia Rock - Stânca Babacaia (Babacai, Baba Gaia or Baba Geea) is a strange stone, relatively close to the Romanian riverbank, with a height of 7 meters, the normal level of the Danube in the gorge, and it is the only occurrence of this kind on all 140 kilometers between Baziaş and Portile de Fier. It is an eroded limestone relic from Cretaceous, left on the old riverbed. Its presence has generated all sorts of local legends, and some people with rich fantasy included it in the category of so-called civilization simulacra of the Pelasgians, associating the name of Baba Geea - Mother Earth with Zamolxe's Dochia on Ceahlău.

The Iron Gates Parc is a protected area established under Law No. 5/2000 on the approval of the National Spatial Plan - Section III - protected areas, as an area where remarkable beauty and the diversity of landscapes can be capitalized under unspoiled traditions, and the quality of community life can be the result of economic activities of residents, conducted in harmony with nature.

Iron Gates Natural Park correspond to IUCN category V: protected landscapes: protected area managed mainly for landscape conservation and recreation.

Peștera Gaura Haiducească 01

The cave is located on the territories of the Iron Gates Natural Park. Its length is 1370 m, and it is placed 3 km from Moldova Noua.

The Cave is the underground part of the Ogașul Găurii, which flowed initially through the current Glade Cave. Galleries and halls are mostly developed on a system of diaclaze, totaling 714 m; 372 m can bee accessed by going upwards, and 342 m by going downwards. A lively little stream enters the cave beneath a monumental gate 10 m high and 20 m wide, and flows then through an enormous hall, over 100 m long, 60 m wide and about 25 m maximum in height.
